More than thousands of gold and silver

"The law of Your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver." Psalms 119:72.

The writer of Psalm 119 esteemed one word inspired by the Holy Spirit, spoken by God to him personally, to be of more value than an abundance of material wealth. But look what it was in the preceding verse that gave him that appreciation for God’s Word.

"It is good for me that I have been afflicted, so that I might learn Your statutes" (Psalms 119:71).

Notice the affliction had two effects. First, it gave him a rich appreciation for hearing from God. Second it separated him from any desire for, or trust in earthly security.
